ii – The Mysterious Visitor

J.D.: This is almost painful to look at, knowing what happens to it.
Craig: I know, I remember drawing Tara in this space later on in chapter 1, and it was heartbreaking to draw.
J.D.: On the second shelf behind Bryce is a bunch of birthday presents. It’s too small to read, but one of the tags actually reads “To Tara”.
Craig: It was hard drawing the text on the window backwards. I ended up digitally inserting the text backwards into the second draft of the pencils so that J.D. could ink it.
J.D.: Later we got better; we didn’t have to do that for “Goth Topic” at the end of Chapter 2. If I recall, I didn’t ink it at all. I just typed it in and flipped it on the computer.
Craig: Right into the final panel?
J.D.: I think so.
Craig: I love how Rex seems to bring darkness into the shop with him in panel 4.
J.D.: It was interesting working on this one — and that in particular — because I was trying to finish it up so we could leave for a three-day vacation. And we had friends staying with us at the time. It felt kind of weird to be working with such darkness with other people occasionally coming into the room. Also it meant I didn’t have to shade that corner a second time. 🙂
Craig: I believe Bryce is reading Shakespeare.
J.D.: Appropos.

Wow, I never even noticed some of those things. I just also noticed the “Druidic Texts Just In” (I think that’s what it says) sign in the bookcase. Little things like that do loads to add to the quality of the strip.
