J.D.: It was an interesting challenge to warp Rex’s dialogue so that he seemed not-quite-together, and yet leave it legible to someone who didn’t know what he was saying. Also we had a big fight about the shape of Bryce’s head. Well, fight is too strong, but —
Craig: Yeah, Bryce’s head reminds me of Patrick Stewart’s, so I sort of tried to draw it that way.
J.D.: And I kept trying to redraw it another way. So the shape of his head changes subtly from panel to panel.
Craig: I love how the background in panel 1 is so washed out by comparison to Rex and Bryce. It really makes them stand out and makes the background seem less real.
J.D.: Actually, I washed out the background in large part to give the impression of very strong sunlight, because I thought it was important to give the impression of the passage of time between the beginning and end besides Bryce looking at his watch.
Craig: Yeah, I think one of the weaknesses of this page is that it doesn’t communicate as well as I’d like that Rex was there all day.
J.D.: Except for Bryce saying so.
Craig: I should probably have broken this up into two pages. But then, we had this discussion at the time.
J.D.: And this worked best.
Craig: I’m very proud of Rex’s hands in panel 4. I had been practicing hands a lot and I think they came out pretty well.
J.D.: I had so much fun working with the color on the last panel. It was morbidly entertaining. Should I not have said that? 🙂
Craig: I remember I used my Luigi doll as my model for the last panel–
J.D.: I remember that! And you were holding him as though you were going to kill him!
Craig: –yeah, like I was gonna pop his head off. Which… gih. Anyway.
J.D.: Yeeeaaaah… The stitchwork on Rex’s sleeves in panel 4 took a lot of work. But I think it looks good.
Craig: It does. Very cool.
J.D.: And for those who want to know what the book says… you’re not supposed to be able to read it.
Craig: Yeah. It’s… druidic. Yeah.
J.D.: 🙂 Actually, I didn’t want to have to pin down what the book said.
