1-1 – Chapter 1
Sunday, December 31st, 2006– Commentary –
Craig: How did you find this quote?
J.D.: I actually have a compilation of fairy tales written by the Brothers Grimm, as well as several other compilations of myths and legends concerning fairies. I wanted a quote involving someone having to fulfill an agreement that they made.
Craig: And of course that plays in perfectly with the theme of Chapter 1. Actually, it plays in perfectly with the theme of the entire comic. Many of the main characters are bound up in agreements or contracts. Leon, Lillith, the Maintainer —
J.D.: — some characters we haven’t introduced yet —
Craig: –right, right.
J.D.: I had a lot of fun writing the legalese underneath the quote, because I knew that our readers would decipher what was written there. So I had to make it as vague as possible if I wanted to preserve the mystery of the chapter.
Craig: That was a good idea, as the contents of this particular contract aren’t revealed until the end of Chapter 2.
J.D.: And even then there are details we still haven’t divulged.
Craig: I should point out, that like all our chapter pages, this is entirely J.D.’s work.
J.D.: I’m very proud of how this one works, especially the firelight from the candle in the background.
Craig: I love the contract itself. it almost looks real, between the fraying of the edges and the crinklyness of the paper.
J.D.: Actually, I did things like curling paper and then holding it up to the light to see how the shadows would fall. I love candles.
