3-2 Half-breed

Craig: Ah, Rex. Good to have you back. We’ve missed you since the prologue. 🙂
J.D.: Rex is a great villain. I like Ignatius better though.
Craig: Oh? Why is that?
J.D.: Ignatius is *smart*. He’s subtle. He’s capable of keeping his cool and thinking his way out of things, because he doesn’t have the massive power behind him that Rex obviously does.
Craig: I agree. Though Rex is showing some smarts and sublety here as he recruits Hal.
J.D.: But how long will this composure last? I mean, we know he killed a bunch of druids to slake his bloodlust (page v), but how long will that hold him to his purpose?
Craig: True. The first thing that Rex did upon waking up was murdering the druids that summoned him, then killing Bryce after he helped him find his name (page iii).
J.D.: Exactly. How long before he kills again?
Craig: On the other hand, upon waking the first thing Ignatius did was kill Annis (page 2-23) and then seek to take revenge on Leon (page 1-21).
J.D.: Yes, but Annis had tortured him for 200 years. The druids hadn’t done anything to Rex. In fact, they had helped him out, bringing him to Earth and all. Now he can run amok!
Craig: You’re right, Ignatius’s actions were very purposeful and thought out. Rex killing the druids and Bryce were almost bestial actions. He took joy in killing them. For Ignatius, killing is more a means to an end.
J.D.: Exactly. Ignatius doesn’t waste resources.

Ignatius has style. But Rex has bloodlust, power, and still manages to act intelligently. So Rex > Ignatius as a villain to me, thus far.

I don’t know… Style tends to leave a better impression of villany on me than simple bloodlust, power, and subtle maneuvering.
Then again, self-pity in a villan- or hero- generally causes worsens my impression of the character in question.

Yeah, I’m with Jason on the style thing. Don’t get me wrong, Rex is the sort of villain that is more successful, but stylish villain-ness is somehow more endearing 🙂
On the other hand, Rex is decidedly better looking, and I guess that helps a good villain too …
