3-11 Love’s Gamble
Friday, August 24th, 2007– Commentary –
J.D.: It’s nice to be able to present both sides of how to react to the forbidden love situation without either choice seeming uninformed or unintelligent.
Craig: It’s interesting, because Angelina comes to it from the perspective of having something of great value — her and Hector’s love for each other — and being willing to sacrifice for it. Leon takes a much more pragmatic view.
J.D.: Which is also a valid approach to the situation.
Craig: Definitely.
J.D.: I just wonder if Leon would have the same perspective if he were the one in love, or if he would jump to Angelina’s side of the fence.
Craig: I don’t know. Leon is very passionate, but I don’t see him as being ruled by his emotions —
J.D.: — Broke into the Maintainer’s storage unit. For a VIDEO GAME.
Craig: Which was premeditated, planned, and executed.
J.D.: Much like his love would be, I imagine. 🙂
Craig: Nonetheless, I think if Leon were forced into a position where he had to choose to love or follow the rules, I think his response would be to adjust the rules.
J.D.: To find a third option? 😀
Craig: It’s what he does best.

This is my favourite page out of all of Penance. The art (especially panel 3), the dialog, emotion, everything just seems perfect. 🙂

Well done here, showing us a little more of Leon’s and Angelina’s characters. I have to admit, Leon shows a very cool demeanor under extreme pressure- like metallic hydrogen.
And I will admit, there’s nothing for a little heart-to-heart like a hole in the chest. (Although, it looks to be a little more towards the pancreas and spleen here; no wonder he bleeds so badly.)

Best page of all this far. Artwork is near perfect, expressions great, and dialog is great. And last two panels give us something to wait for.

Yes, as I recall this was the last page. We are now caught up. Does this mean that it’s time and we are ready to continue?
As far as a place to be left hanging, this was both the best and worst possible spot. I mean, the story is JUST starting to unfold and you are just beginning to feel like you are getting a feel for what’s happening. Then you have your “unwilling hero” apparently bleeding to death through events not in any way related to any of his goals. It’s the worst spot to be left hanging because so much is up in the air. However, you have to admit that it’s pretty much a tailor made cliffhanger spot. I don’t think you could have set it up better to cut off at this point if you had tried. Lol. And it was an excellent idea to go back to the beginning as a refresher.
Everything on this page is amazing. The emotions displayed in each character’s face throughout the page is superb. I especially like panel 3. The sweat pouring down Leon’s face, his expression, everything. I can just hear him speaking through the clenched teeth… Then, in panel 5, the expression and body language of Angelina as she at first thinks Leon is overreacting. Amazing.

This was not the last page. I think this is the last thing we know about Leon, but the last one was with Tara.

That’s right. She goes looking for Rex doesn’t she?
