3-41 Vs Charm

Friday, April 18th, 2008

We have house guests visiting this week, so we’re taking a break from Penance. New page on the 2nd this weekend (running a little late, but the page is nearly done).

Hee, hee. Excellent episode. Ignatius shows that he’s smarter than expected, and Marcus gets around Ignatius orders. And that small background conversation: prizeless 🙂

  2. Andi Says:

Ignatius is a smart devil, but I’m still curious to see how he manages to get out of this one alive. And I still want to know why Marcus wasn’t supposed to come out of his box yet. And why he was confined there in the first place. And a hundred other things. 🙂 Ah… the sign of a good story. 🙂

  3. Charles Says:

And now we see the implications and weaknesses of both the charm and the domination. The former is more wide-reaching and effective until it is broken (something that Rex has to deal with at the moment). So the truth, oddly enough, is Ignatius’s weapon against Rex. But he has the tiger by the tail. That suggests when Tara snaps out of it, she will be a redoubled ball of energy against Rex.

Ignatius may be clever, but he is risky. He chose the domination, but that has its limits to direct orders that can be semantically bent. Guess who’s going to be the double agent. Yes, it’s Marcus. So he’s in danger. And it’s a real chess match.

Oh Leon! The stakes just went up. Note also the priest (with displaced specs – good lighting – and pectoral cross aglow). I don’t think that he will have died in vain.

  4. MyrddinEmrys Says:

Oh yeah… Angelina and Hector. I was wondering if y’all were ever going to get back to that storyline again.

Also, I had to look back to find Hector’s name… and I must say, sometime in the last 15 or 20 strips, the artwork has gone from good to fantastic!

  5. Andi Says:

I looked back to see exactly what Rex told her when he did the charm. Found it in “A Disgusting Display”. All he said was “I think you will like this arrangement.” So what would you say to dispute such a nebulous statement? Is it as simple as “You don’t like this arrangement,” or do you have to say something that addresses the more specific aspects of the situation? I guess I’m wondering if it has more to do with the exact wording used or the meaning behind the words.

  6. Martin Bazley Says:

I don’t suppose you’d mind changing the name of last week’s strip? Only apparently Webnonsense’s definition of adult material now extends to the word ‘domination’. I know from experience that the ICT bi… teacher won’t change the censor, so could you please change the name of the page?

    Sorry to be a pain.

Martin (the same one who caused you all that hassle last time)

  7. Djabanete Says:

Ignatius’ hand is glowing white in panel 3. In panel 4, his hand is back to normal but he has a sly grin on his face. Something’s up…

  8. Maverick Says:

Are his eyes glowing in panel 4?

  9. b? Says:

Ooh, thanks for pointing out the glowy hand! My theory? He’s making a stray beam of light glint off the cross worn by the dead priest. Hal and the others probably would have noticed it on their own, but why take chances? I think it’s safe to say the charm “Rex” had on them is now broken.

Bravo, Ignatius. I like the way you work. Just never EVER allow yourself to be seen without clothes again. That was just a bit TOO creepy!

  10. Andi Says:

I don’t think his eyes are glowing, but I can’t be sure.

Am I missing something or is Penance updating on Saturday nights lately? I know the date on the comic says it posted on Fridays, but I keep finding the update Saturday nights.

  11. Craig Says:

Andi: Guilty as charged! Back when we were working ahead on Penance, we scheduled each page to go up on Friday at midnight. Now that we’re typically a day behind (like this week) it still ends up looking like it went up on Friday. Our bad.

  12. Craig Says:

Martin: It would be difficult to remove the word “domination” from our comic. It’s used in the page titles, dialogue, commentary, and reader comments.

Fortunately, if your ISP is blocking the word on a page-by-page basis, then your problem should go away when this week’s page goes up, since it will no longer be in the “last week” link.
