1-11 – Blood Freely Given
Friday, February 9th, 2007– Commentary –
J.D.: I find it amusing that Leon’s concern is not the stab wound in his hand nor the possible infection from stabbing himself with dirty wire cutters in a dusty basement. No, he wants to make sure he can finish splicing his internet connection before someone catches him.
Craig: Amusing? This is a guy who has his priorities straight.
J.D.: Leon reminds me a lot of someone I know. I love the artistry of Leon sitting in the pile of debris in panel 1.
Craig: Thank you. I spent some time designing that panel before I drew it.
J.D.: I actually enjoy a great deal doing pages like this and dungeon pages. The lighting in them is so much fun. And, I can be lazy, and not draw any more background than is lit up by whatever light source the person is carrying.
Craig: You can see that Leon destroys a few more ornament balls as he works.
J.D.: One of them is a porcelain angel.
Craig: Oh, the one with its head broken off?
J.D.: Yep. He actually smashes one in panel 2 as he throws it off of the box. I should note for those wondering: most people cannot see the auras surrounding books, parchments, and such things that we light up for the readers.
Craig: Yes, good point. From Leon’s point of view, the pink glowing scroll is just another piece of paper. Neither can he see that the screen of his laptop is glowing a pale green. We give the readers second sight in this comic… because we love you all so much. 😀

The first time I’d read this page I’d only noticed the clawed hand reaching for the scroll in the last frame. This time I noticed two additional things: a) the blood spot is glowing, and b) the blood spot is, or has become, a specific patterned shape. Coincidence? I think not…

I don’t see how the blood spot on the parchment changed. It orginally looks like a triangle with three dots on each side. Which is what it also appears to be in the last frame, just actually shapped like such.
Can’t wait to see what comes of the reaching claw.

If you compare the 4th to the 6th panel, you can see the larger blot significantly change from a blot to an even triangle, and the smaller splatters into perfect circles around it. And it glows. I didn’t actually notice the shape the first time I saw the page… the glow and the claw kind of had my attention the most.

It’s the shape of the hut on the Angband icon. pretty cool. (I just now started reading Penance and read the beginning up to here in the past couple hours(white I played a little Angband at the same time..)
