3-7 Denied Access

J.D.: I like how we get to show in this page that whatever else Leon is, he’s not stupid. He knows Elvish when he sees it, and he puts two and two together when it’s placed in front of him. But he also doesn’t jump to conclusions.
Craig: I like his anger at the Maintainer in panel 4. The Maintainer gave him “unlimited access”, but as it turns out he’s going to have to do a lot of work to to take advantage of that access. Knowing Elvish script isn’t enough — he might very well have to learn to read Elvish.
J.D.: The question remains: Is Leon afraid of a little hard work?
Craig: We’ve seen that Leon is more than willing to do lots of hard, dangerous, even illegal work —
J.D.: — when something he wants is at stake.
Craig: I don’t know Elvish, and I probably couldn’t tell the difference between Sindarin and Quenyan runes if my life depended on it. So whenever I draw something that has runes on it, I usually just write the word “runes” and let J.D. sort it out.
J.D.: I remember your original sketch for panel 3. You had some fun with that one. Leon’s scroll looked like an ad for the Pokemon TV show. We had it on the gallery for a while. I thought it was very funny.
Craig: Panel three was actually the hardest to draw. I realized I had no idea what hands holding a scroll in that way look like. Or what a scroll held that way looks like. So I took a piece of paper, rolled it up, crinkled it, and then unfurled it with my hands. Then I looked hard at it, and tried to draw what I saw. It looked wrong. So I posed again. It still looked wrong.
J.D.:Â Wash, rinse, repeat.
Craig: Exactly. By the time I had actually reproduced something that looked like two hands holding a scroll, covering it in pokemon was my only means of release. 🙂
J.D.: I really liked coloring that panel. As hard as it was for you to draw, it was that easy to color. 😀
Craig: I assume the runes read “word of recall?”
J.D.: Phonetically. I’ve started runing phonetically, since there’s no easy way to translate English into Elvish. Doubling letters such as the double “L” in “recall” is kind of meaningless in Sindarin.

Took me a little getting into, but I’m hooked on your damn comic now, it’s really drawing me in, and the artwork just gets better and better.
