3-26 Lord Azriel
Friday, November 23rd, 2007(Commentary for page 3-25 is up now)
– Commentary –
Craig: Raziel doesn’t look very obeisant in panel 2.
J.D.: He looks more like he’s ready for a fight.
Craig: While Azriel certainly gets the award for the intimidating entrance, I think Raziel looks cooler in general, with all those tattoos and the black wings.
J.D.: Black wings are fairly uncommon among archons.
Craig: Once again, Liron’s wings just look awesome. They just radiate light off the page. 🙂
J.D.: Thanks. They make lighting a pain at times, but they do look incredibly cool. 🙂
Craig: Azriel is pretty quick to jump to the conclusion that Angelina was the one wielding the blade that attacked Leon. After all, there’s another ice archon kneeling right there.
J.D.: Well, Angelina did look pretty panicked when he asked the question of her, and she didn’t seem to have a ready answer. Good thing all he can do is ‘recommend’ the maximum punishment to the Council.
Craig: Well, seeing as how quick he is to decide who’s guilty, he might decide to… save the Council some time?
J.D.: He still has to answer to them eventually too. Hot-headed he may be — no pun intended — but he doesn’t quite seem that foolhardy.
Craig: The runes on the sword spell out the three phrases that comprise the tenets of judgment archons. The runes on the right side of the blade, left side, and guard respectively read the following:
The accused shall be judged
The guilty shall restitute
The unrepentant shall be slain
J.D.: Ouch. Something tells me Azriel only has memorized two of that three. The whole restitution thing seems a little beyond him at the moment.
Craig: Azriel mentions the Treaty of Covenant Hill in panel 3. Covenant Hill is referenced several times elsewhere in the comic. Examples include pages 1-2 and 3-15.

Enter huge fiery angry demon-angel-dude bringing the smackdown, one suspects because he rather likes it. And coming to his friend’s defense, up stands Leon, human, shirtless, and brandishing a hot dog.
Right…so, Leon’s toast. Wonder how Tara’s doing?

“Beware the bad hot dog, Archon!
The stench that burns, with taste to match!
Beware the dry mustard, stale bun
And runny catsup to match!”
(I’m sorry…)
(No offense intended to the chef. Or Lewis Carroll.)

Glad to see Mr. “No, My Huge Flaming Wings Aren’t Compensation For Something” has a firm standard to work on. “You attack humans, your butt is mine. Now, in a minute I’m going to probably attack this human.”
(To be fair, maybe the Treaty of Whogivesaflip doesn’t stop *him* from attacking humans, but that’s how I read it.)
P.S. Panel 5 == “HOT DOG OF +4 SMITING!” Made me roffle.

Well the big bad judgment archon can’t disobey his own “no attacking humans” rule, so Leon shouldn’t be in too much trouble. Hopefully Angelina and Hector won’t get busted.
But yes, brandishing a hot dog was hilarious. Azriel is probably going to ruin Leon’s meal in more ways than one.

The hot dog is *awesome*
And Leon is crazy, lol

Ojomax: Oops, we forgot to do commentary on 3-25! Thanks for noticing.

I suppose the question becomes: how quickly does Leon learn and how quickly can he think?
I wonder what would happen if Azriel were to attack Angelina and Leon jumped in front of the blade…
Unfortunately I don’t think it would be that simple. I doubt that judgment archons judge and punish in that manner.

I doubt it; if stabbing is a casual expression of anger among them, something tells me something more exotic and less pleasant is required for punishment.
And I should have glared at that satire more deeply before posting it. Ah well. Hopefully, the chef did better than I.

Leon’s eyes really interest me in panel 5. They remind me of Lillith’s eyes in “The Hall of Portals” (http://www.penancecomic.com/2007/06/29/2-20-the-hall-of-portals/)
